Major League Baseball General Managers Job Is Secure

Kansas City Royals GM Dayton Moore says manager Trey Hillman's job is safe through next season, the Kansas City Star reports.

The Royals' implosion the last two months has fueled speculation that Hillman might be on the hot seat, but Moore doesn't believe all the blame shouldn't be pinned on the 46-year old skipper.

MLB Team Makes Trade

The Baltimore Orioles have traded infielder Oscar Salazar to the San Diego Padres for righthanded reliever Cla Meredith, the Baltimore Sun reports.

Meredith, a 26-year-old submariner, was 4-2 with a 4.17 ERA in 36 2/3 innings for the Padres. He will join the Orioles either Tuesday or Wednesday during their series against the Yankees, Orioles president Andy MacPhail told the newspaper.

All Star MLB Pitcher May Not Return This Season

A couple of months ago, San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy was the talk of the trade market. Now he might not pitch again for anyone until 2010 because of the ankle injury that has sidelined him since June 8.

Padres general manager Kevin Towers told the San Diego Union-Tribune that the chances of Peavy pitching again this season are 50-50. Said Towers: "We'll know more when he comes out of the cast. I can't speak for Jake, but I'd much rather have him ready for 2010 than risking more serious injury by coming back too early this year."

Part Owner Of MLB Franchise Dies

Sue Burns knew everybody at the ballpark — players, coaches, scouts, ushers and security guards — and they all knew her, a friendly fixture dressed in orange with her front-row seat.

Burns, a part owner of the San Francisco Giants and devoted philanthropist who was close with home run king Barry Bonds, died on Sunday. She was 58. Burns died of complications from lung cancer, former managing partner Peter Magowan said. She was diagnosed with the disease July 10 and missed Jonathan Sanchez's no-hitter for the Giants that night — a rare absence from the ballpark. Burns attended a game against San Diego the previous day.
