CHARLIES SPORTS NBA BASKETBALL SPORTS NEWS - AUGUST 2009

Two NBA Players Face Suspension
First, J.R. Smith received his basketball punishment: DEN J.R. Smith suspended without pay 7 games by NBA for pleading guilty to reckless driving.
Then, Jason Richardson news: PHX J-Rich suspended without pay 2 games by NBA for pleading guilty to DUI. A brief refresher: Smith's guilty plea was for the accident that killed a friend of his (who wasn't wearing a seatbelt), Richardson was driving drunk. Both are awful people who should probably be suspended forever, like that NFL player who ran over a pedestrian. Sarcasm aside, though, is there a system that determines what traffic offense warrants what kind of suspension? Shouldn't leagues coordinate.
NBA GM Neglects Role In Superstars Past
Allen Iverson isn't perfect. Never was. But every time someone points to his time as Philly as evidence that AI sucks garbage, ask them about the Sixers' personnel moves during that time. For one glorious season, Larry Brown got his guys in the best way possible, the team jelled around Iverson, and the team made the Finals. Otherwise, watching their front office in "action" involved a potential foreshadowing of Brown's New York downfall and then wondering why puppet Billy King kept the job once Brown departed.
Former NBA Player Is Now A US Army Soldier In Iraq
Tim James apologized for being late. A rough day at work, said the Miami Heat's 1999 first-round draft pick. Vehicles broke down, problems flared up, and he simply fell behind. "It happens," James said. "Even here." Even here - on the front line of the Iraq war. A former NBA player who often wondered about his true calling, Tim James is now a U.S. Army soldier, a transformation that even many of the people closest to him never saw coming. "I got my degree, lived the life I was able, have my freedom and became a professional athlete," James said last week from Iraq. "I'm the example of the American dream." James is at Camp Speicher, the massive base near Tikrit, 85 miles north of Baghdad, not far from Saddam Hussein's hometown and where insurgents still are a perpetual threat. For Miami Northwestern High, the Miami Hurricanes, three NBA teams and some foreign clubs, he was forward Tim James. For the Army, he's Spc. Tim James of Task Force ODIN - short for Observe, Detect, Identify, Neutralize.
Dunleavy Could Make Early Return To 2009 NBA Season
Indiana Pacers guard Mike Dunleavy says he could return from a severe knee injury earlier than expected. Dunleavy says he can do everything except have physical contact, and he expects that to change within weeks. Pacers coach Jim O'Brien has said he didn't expect Dunleavy to be available until at least January 2010. He had surgery in March to remove a bone spur from the patella tendon on his right knee.
