CHARLIES SPORTS NEWS FOR NFL
AUGUST 2009
NFL rookie Running Back Injures Ankle
Arizona running back Beanie Wells missed another workout with a sprained right ankle on Monday, raising doubts that he'll play in the Cardinals' preseason opener.
Wells ran and did agility drills on a side field during a morning practice at Northern Arizona University. Wells said the ankle is improving, but he didn't know if he'd be available when the Cardinals open the preseason at Pittsburgh on Thursday night.
The first-round pick out of Ohio State sprained the ankle in his first practice on Aug. 1, shortly after agreeing to a five-year, $11.8 million contract, with $6.3 million guaranteed.
NLF Team Looking For Breakout Seasons From Two Second Year Players
Stripped down to his black skintight shorts on one of the hottest days of the year, Devin Thomas was a lonely figure on the Washington Redskins practice field Monday morning.
He ran sprints around orange cones, pantomimed catching the ball in pass patterns and stretched his nagging hamstring against the goal post.
"It's frustrating not being able to be out there with the guys right now," said Thomas, the sweat dripping from his forearms, "so I'm doing everything I can to get back."
A half-hour earlier, when the regular practice had ended, another second-year receiver walked off the field. Malcolm Kelly has also been battling a hamstring issue during training camp, but at least he was back in a helmet and full pads and was able to participate.
NFL Team Owner Attends Practice After Having heart Transplant
Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson has attended his first training-camp practice since receiving a heart transplant.
He immediately addressed the biggest offseason issue to his players: Julius Peppers.
Looking much thinner but saying he feels well, Richardson gathered the team for a pep talk before Monday morning's workout. He then asked Peppers to join him in the middle of the circle.
The Pro Bowl defensive end skipped all offseason workouts after saying he wanted to play elsewhere. He eventually relented and signed a one-year, $16.7 million deal.
NFL Running Back Misses practice to Rest Toe
Cowboys running back Felix Jones missed practice to rest an injured toe that shortened his rookie season.
Jones was held out Monday morning, but said he would be back later in the day.
The speedy Jones was already out with a hamstring injury last season when he hurt the toe, forcing him onto injured reserve. He's being counted on to juice up the offense after making several dazzling plays in six games last year.
