COLLEGE FOOTBALL PICKS

college football free picks. week 3 college football recap
Three full weeks of football have been played and questions from the preseason are being definitively answered.
Auburn's passing game is as iffy as feared and Tommy Tuberville's streak of Iron Bowl wins over Bama is in deep trouble. Taylor Bennett isn't an upgrade over Reggie Ball at quarterback for the Yellow Jackets, as hard as it is to believe. Oklahoma has to be favored over Texas in the Oct. 6 Red River Shootout. The Pac-10 conference schedule will be way more fun to watch than to wager on.
Here are a few more specific things I took out of Saturday's games with an eye on betting the rest of the season.
Alabama Crimson Tide
Alabama went for the kill early and it's a good thing – the Tide would have been rolled at home if they hadn't jumped to a 21-0 lead against Arkansas.
John Parker Wilson relied almost exclusively on D.J. Hall to build the early lead, then did the same with Matt Caddell in Alabama's game-winning drive. He might want to work on diversifying his looks before LSU comes to Tuscaloosa in November.
Arkansas Razorbacks
Darren McFadden set a fantastic tone early when he lined up behind center in a third-and-short and implored the Bryant-Denny crowd to make even more noise than they already were. McFadden got the first down. Tide defenders twice tackled him by his jersey in the first quarter, a clue that McFadden was in for a huge fourth quarter against tired Bama legs.
Central Michigan Chippewas
Dan LeFevour had healthy passing numbers on Saturday, but the bulk of them came in the second half after Purdue had already posted a huge lead. LeFevour flat-out missed throws that he routinely made last year and was indecisive when leaving the pocket. The 31-0 halftime deficit told the true story of the Chippewas on Saturday.
Florida Gators
The Gators were flattered by the final 59-20 score over Tennessee on Saturday. Florida didn't record a first down until there was 1:36 remaining in the first quarter and padded the score in the fourth against a disheartened Vols squad because, well, it was the Vols in town, after all.
Tim Tebow's recklessness is going to cost the Gators at some point. Tennessee's interception return touchdown was the Florida receiver's fault, but Tebow threw a number of other passes yesterday that could have been picked off. His habit of leading into opposing defenders with his head could also put him on the injury list sooner rather than later.
Illinois Fighting Illini
They aren't the "Mountaineers of the Midwest" just yet, but the Illini backfield isn't too far down in talent from West Virginia's. Juice Williams' 10-yard scamper in the third quarter was, in fact, identical to Pat White's opening touchdown for the Mountaineers against Maryland last Thursday. Keeping in mind that Syracuse's inability to tackle inflates offensive numbers, Illinois' skill players showed enough speed and footwork to make them a threat in a down year in the Big Ten.
Michigan State Spartans
The Spartans struggled to beat Pitt in a game they should have put away in the second half. The Panthers were playing their third-string quarterback and lacked their top offensive weapons, but Michigan State penalties and carelessness (e.g. not having enough defenders on the field and calling a timeout late in the fourth quarter when Pitt needed a touchdown and was out of timeouts themselves) kept this game close. The Spartans' strong running game should make them a far safer bet with the lead than they were on Saturday.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Jimmy Clausen must have envied his opposite number, Wolverines freshman Ryan Mallett, who had all day to throw. Clausen was pressured and sacked at will before getting mercifully yanked at the end of the third quarter. The Irish offense remains a mess, with a 13-yard gain on a fake punt being Saturday's longest rush.
The Irish defense also gives their opposition confidence. Michigan called for some razzle-dazzle with Mallett acting as a receiver once the Wolverines were up 17-0 and realized Notre Dame posed no threat whatsoever.
Ohio State Buckeyes
Brian Robiskie had a freshman cornerback opposite him in single coverage and Todd Boeckman hit him in full stride for a 68-yard touchdown. No one was happier for the completion than the Buckeyes' running backs, as Boeckman's earlier inefficiency let Washington defenders key on Ohio State's running game.
The Buckeyes are stacked at running back, but Boeckman has the unfortunate ability to turn potential touchdown drives into field goal attempts.
Purdue Boilermakers
They haven't played a BCS-conference opponent yet, but Purdue looks even more dangerous than they did last year. Up 24-0 in the second quarter, the Boilermakers went for the jugular with a flea-flicker bomb. Curtis Painter's pass was right on the money and the Central Michigan defender had no choice but to interfere with the receiver. No matter, as Painter tossed another pinpoint bomb on the very next play. In a conference filled with disappointing offenses, the Boilermakers might pack the most scoring punch.
Temple Owls
Temple was robbed of a potential game-winning touchdown on Saturday. The replay showed that receiver Brian Francis landed in bounds in the end zone, a touchdown that would have given the Owls the lead with only 40 seconds left. Owls fans shouldn't feel too hard done by, though. The play was ugly from start to finish as the quarterback rolled out of the pocket tentatively and threw into double-coverage. Francis happened to be in the right place at the right time for a tipped pass and a resulting touchdown would have been overly harsh on UConn.
Tennessee Volunteers
Erik Ainge's pinky isn't affecting his throwing, but it's affecting the way he hands the ball off to his backs. And it cost the Vols in the Swamp. Ainge is using his left (non-throwing) hand to hand off, regardless of which side he's turning to. The third-quarter fumble attributed to running back Arian Foster was really Ainge's fault and it was a momentum killer. Tennessee was driving to make it a one-point ball game, but didn't score again after Florida's fumble return touchdown made it 35-20.
Texas Longhorns
Three games into the season, the Horns have only played one half of football that merits their place in the top 10. The biggest play of Saturday's 35-32 win over Central Florida was Jamaal Charles' 46-yard touchdown run with less than four minutes left when the Knights defense gave up on the play after they saw a flag. The infraction was a UCF offsides call which was declined, and the Horns held on. Charles' final numbers were pretty but his fumble in the fourth quarter when Texas needed to kill the clock could have killed the Horns' national title hopes.
Washington Huskies
Jake Locker may have an NFL career ahead of him, but at this point in his career, is he any better for the Huskies than Isiah Stanback was last year? Locker has speed and can move the pile when he runs the ball, but so could Stanback. When the Huskies were down in the fourth quarter, their unsuccessful comeback attempts were entirely run-based because they couldn't trust Locker to move the ball through the air. He threw a pair of drive-killing picks late in each half that displayed his inexperience.

free college football picks. charliessports.com has the most popular college football picks & college football free picks on the internet and here is an early look at some of the week 3 college football & college football free picks slate.
college football picks- charliessports.com a full slate of college football & college football free picks outside of th top 25.
Even though the big television networks don’t think anyone cares, there is life beyond the Top 25. In fact, some of the best betting opportunities are found in games that don’t involve any teams that will be playing for the national championship in January.
How about Iowa State shocking the Hawkeye State and winning straight-up as 17 ½-point underdogs against Iowa last week? Or the shootout between Tulsa and BYU that went a good 51 points over the total?
Don’t tell me there are only 25 teams in the country that matter. There are plenty of games worth your attention without a ranked team on the docket. Here’s a rundown of few of them.
Illinois at Indiana (+3)
Illinois is by far the sexier team in this matchup and with rising superstars on offense like Juice Williams and Arrelious Benn, they’ll probably get the bulk of the action on this line. The Illini offense has been racking up nearly 450 yards per game, most of it on the ground, forcing defenses to stack the box as they try to contain Williams, who will bolt from the pocket at the slightest hint of a seam. But don’t sleep on the Indiana Hoosiers this year. Their offense is more balanced than the Illini’s, they’ll have a huge home-field advantage and they’re getting the points in what should turn out to be a tight contest.
Syracuse at Louisville (-37)
Yeah, I know that Louisville is still in the Top 25, but I included them in this list out of protest because the way they've performed, they have no business among the country's top teams. We all know that Syracuse is an awful Big East squad. They proved that with nasty losses in all three of their games thus far, none of which even came close to the generous handicaps they were tapped with. But Louisville hasn’t proven itself to be the top-notch team it was expected to be coming into the season and they certainly haven't shown anything that merits a pointspread like this. We all remember how poorly they performed as big favorites over Middle Tennessee and a straight-up loss to Kentucky doesn’t inspire much confidence. The Cardinals should have no trouble finding the end zone against the Orange, but the question is, do you trust a defense that allowed 42 points against a Sun Belt team to protect against a number like this? I wouldn’t.
Georgia Tech at Virginia (+3 ½)
This is one of those rare pointspreads that makes you do a double-take when you see it on the board. Yes, you are reading that correctly. The same team that embarrassed Notre Dame in South Bend in the season opener is laying just 3 ½ against Virginia. The Cavaliers haven’t shown anything this year that would indicate they can hang in with Georgia Tech. Tashard Choice is listed as questionable with a hamstring injury, but even if he doesn’t play, Tech has a good looking backup in freshman Jonathan Dwyer. Hey, if an unheralded back like Wyoming’s Devin Moore can slice up the Virginia defense for 125 yards, why can’t Dwyer?
Temple at Bowling Green (-21)
Here’s a news flash for all the casual college football watchers out there: Temple is not as bad as you think. They had a terrible season last year (1-11) and somehow let themselves get trounced by Buffalo two weeks ago, but they’ve also showed some promising signs. Their defense has been good against the pass (which is Bowling Green’s strength on offense) and the offense, admittedly short on talent, has been relatively successful with its patient, grinding approach.
That should make it hard for Bowling Green to cover the big number here. However, there are a couple of major factors working against the Owls. First of all, Temple’s only win last season was against Bowling Green, so there’s no chance they’ll be looking past this game. The other negative is that Bowling Green had last week off, so they’ve had a full two weeks to rest up and prepare for this rematch. Not good news if you’re an Owls fan.
Duke at Navy (-11)
You want to talk about a letdown spot? How about when a team ends a 22-game losing streak, on the road, as a 15-point underdog? Some juniors on the Duke team had never won a college game before last week. After two fruitless years, you can bet the players spent the week talking up their big plays, such as Leon Wright’s interception in the end zone and Ronnie Drummer’s 56-yard touchdown reception, and toasting the big win. But Navy doesn’t care that Duke is on a high. They’re going to welcome the Blue Devils with their customary combination of tough defense and low-gear, energy-sapping offense. I say the party in Durham is about to come to an abrupt end.
Michigan State at Notre Dame (+12 ½)
It’s a sad day in South Bend when the Irish are on the receiving end of a spread like this at home, but the awful truth is that this Notre Dame team is truly awful. Maybe Brady Quinn really was better than Joe Montana, but the drop-off in talent on the Notre Dame sideline is shocking. Notre Dame’s freshman quarterback was sacked so many times on Saturday, you have to wonder if he's been dating all the girlfriends of his offensive linemen. There is a big, fat zero in the “positives” column for this team and while Michigan State isn’t exactly a national championship team, they do have a 3-0 record coming into this one.
Memphis at Central Florida (-7 )
So it’s Year 4 of the George O’Leary regime at Central Florida and if a Week 1 win on the road against N.C. State wasn’t enough to convince you the coach has built a winner, how about last week’s near-upset against No. 6 Texas? The Longhorns had no trouble moving the ball, but Texas has one of the best offenses in the country. The really impressive thing was the way the Golden Knights ran the ball (193 rushing yards) and the fight they showed after getting down 23-10 in the third quarter. This team can beat almost anyone and, even against a good defensive team like Memphis, laying a touchdown isn’t enough to hold me back from taking the Knights.
Washington at UCLA (-6 ½)
Maybe it’s because they’re way out there in California, but I just can’t get a handle on this UCLA team. I thought Ben Olson was supposed to be a gun-slinging quarterback – he’s only slightly better than 50 percent and has only five TDs. I thought this defense was supposed to recreate last year’s bone-crushing performance – they travel to Utah last week and turn into marshmallow men. I thought I’d be taking the Bruins minus a couple of touchdowns in this game, but Washington goes out in the first two weeks and beats Syracuse and Boise State, and as it happens, UCLA is handing over less than a touchdown at home. That's interesting.
Washington has won over a lot of fans in so far this year. Freshman QB Jake Locker is kind of like the Tim Tebow of the Pacific Northwest, but last week against an athletic and disciplined defense he was uncomfortable in the pocket and coughed up three interceptions. Last week's loss will wake up the Bruins and they’ll win at home by at least a touchdown … but then again, maybe I just don't get these California teams.
