A
college football free picks. week 4 ats college football recap.
football would be perfect if we weren't bombarded with ads for new TV shows. Another fish-out-of-water sitcom? How daring!
Sports and news, that's all I want out of television. Don't these silly networks know I'm not going to watch their crap?
Here's a sliding scale of new TV shows I've seen advertised during football, ranked in descending order of how likely I am to bother tuning in.
5. Bionic Woman – Loads of action and the title character is smoking hot. A safe formula from the network suffering through its exclusive Notre Dame deal.
4. Dirty Sexy Money – An attention-grabbing title and a cast that cost ABC a ton of cash. Also passes the hot chick test.
3. Cane – Jimmy Smits plays a businessman surrounded by attractive women. Is he a drug dealer? Are the women his sisters or his harem? You tell me, I'm not
checking it out.
2. Big Bang Theory – This is the ad I've seen the most, which makes me want to permanently tune out CBS. Unfortunately they have the SEC game of the week to
lure me back.
1. Cavemen – That we've based a sitcom on a commercial is further proof that we all have a one-way ticket to hell. Besides, if any Geico commercial character
deserves a sitcom, it's that Warren Wallace kid.
On to some betting about the Week 4 betting action that just went down.
Alabama Crimson Tide
The crowd at Bryant-Denny was quieted by Georgia's early touchdown and Alabama's inability to respond. Bama fans were spoiled by last week's 21-0 early lead.
Georgia should never have let Saturday's game go to overtime. The Dawgs gave Alabama field goal attempts late in both halves (a needless facemask penalty in
the first half and a pass interference call on fourth-and-7 in the second) while their usually-dependable kicker Brandon Coutu missed a pair of field goals.
Nick Saban meets his former offensive coordinator from LSU, Jimbo Fisher, as the Tide take on Florida State in Jacksonville next Saturday. The Georgia game
revealed that the Bama offense has work to do before SEC title contention is a realistic target.
Arkansas Razorbacks
Arkansas has suffered two straight punches to the gut, losing to a pair of SEC foes that the Razorbacks could have and should have beaten. They repeatedly
shot themselves in the foot on Saturday (e.g. the fumble return touchdown at the end of the first half, the roughing the kicker penalty to set up a Kentucky
touchdown in the fourth quarter) and the fact that Darren McFadden and Felix Jones were dehydrated and cramping in the first half didn't help.
A demoralized Arkansas squad would be fade bait next week against a tough opponent, but the Razorbacks can regain their confidence against North Texas and
Chattanooga in consecutive weeks.
Clemson Tigers
The final score of 42-20 doesn't justify how badly the Tigers beat the Wolfpack on Saturday. When Cullen Harper connected with James Davis on a 1-yard
touchdown to make the score 24-7 in the second quarter, Clemson had outgained the Pack 322-40 in terms of offensive yards.
The Tigers' best offensive weapons are in the backfield so their passing game involves a lot of short tosses to Davis, C.J. Spiller and Jacoby Ford in the
flats. The trio's athleticism virtually guarantees positive yardage, a boon to Harper to have dumps like that.
N.C. State threatened to cover the second-half spread when Darrell Blackman reached the end zone for the second time, but the Tigers picked off the 2-point
convert and ran it back for a big 4-point swing.
LSU Tigers
The Bayou Bengals' home-field advantage against South Carolina was reduced by three factors: 1) the Gamecocks opened the scoring like it was no big deal; 2)
the pouring rain periodically kept a lot of people out of the stands; and 3) the painted tiger's eye at midfield looks like a prop from a Duran Duran video.
Seriously, the Tigers looked powerful against the Cocks despite their failure to cover the spread. They had a huge yardage advantage through the early
stretches of the game and their depth at running back is almost as amazing as the holes their O-line regularly blasts open. LSU will pound other teams into
submission and be a great second-half bet down the stretch.
Louisville Cardinals
The Covers.com newsroom was abuzz with the Cardinals' inability to tackle, but what amazed me was how mediocre the Louisville offense looked against a
defensive seive. Syracuse made Washington look like USC in its opener and made Illinois look like West Virginia in Week 3. The Cardinals looked like, I dunno
... UTEP? In any case it wasn't good enough.
Kicker Art Carmody badly botched an onside kick attempt that, if recovered, could have given the Cards a chance to win the game. They still had no chance to
cover at -36, though. On the plus side, they have a decent schedule until November kicks in, so there's time to get the defense working and make a run at the
Big East title.
Maryland Terrapins
Maryland fans might feel even worse than Arkansas fans after the Terps coughed up a 21-point lead at Wake Forest on Saturday.
The Demon Deacons were playing sloppily as they fell into a 24-3 deficit, thus making the Wake -3 halftime line very tempting. With Maryland's ability to run
the ball, the Terps seemed golden in the second half. Glad I stayed away.
Jordan Steffy threw a dangerous pass into the end zone that was returned 100 yards and the Deacs' next touchdown was aided by officials who twice disallowed
apparent strips by Maryland defenders. Maryland had lost all momentum by this point and bettors could sense the loss coming. Next up is a trip to Rutgers,
which could get ugly unless Ralph Friedgen can rally his potentially devastated troops.
Michigan Wolverines
The Wolverines owe their rally to Mike Hart, who's taken on the nation's biggest workload and excelled. Frosh quarterback Ryan Mallett hasn't been a
hindrance, though. Mallett completed a couple of fourth-quarter passes under pressure that moved the sticks, killed the clock and deflated Penn State's tired
defense.
Two second-half penalties were the difference for the Wolverines on Saturday. Anthony Morrelli lobbed what would have been a touchdown pass but the Michigan
defender's interference prevented the major. The Nittany Lions had to settle for a field goal to maintain Michigan's lead. Later in the fourth quarter,
Hart's 1-yard plunge was set up by a dicey pass interference call on a Penn State defender playing the ball.
Ohio State Buckeyes
Todd Boeckman-to-Brian Robiskie might turn out to be more productive than the more hyped Troy Smith-to-Ted Ginn Jr. touchdown combo was in 2006. Boeckman is
gaining confidence and Robiskie is routinely burning opposing corners when faced with single coverage. The Buckeyes take on Minnesota next and the Gophers'
defense should boost Boeckman's confidence even further.
Northwestern never had a chance on Saturday with star running back Tyrell Sutton out of the game. The 45-0 halftime score set up a halftime line of Ohio
State -10, which I avoided like the plague. Rob Schoenhoft took over at quarterback for OSU and if a game has ever slowed to something more lethargic than a
crawl, this was the one. The Wildcats covered the second-half line in a sleep-inducing performance.
Pittsburgh Panthers
Pitt fans who booed Tyler Palko last year are realizing that new quarterbacks Kevan Smith and Pat Bostick are a significant step down. The Panthers made a
plethora of turnovers, penalties and various other mental mistakes in the first half that turned the sparse home crowd against them. Deservedly so. The Pitt
defense started strong but was worn down by Connecticut's surprisingly effective ball-control offense.
On a minor positive note, running back (and Wildcat formation quarterback) LeSean McCoy looks like trouble for Big East defenses for the next few seasons.
South Carolina Gamecocks
Steve Spurrier's Gamecocks could have won the game at LSU outright but for three plays: a) Blake Mitchell's tipped pass was intercepted by Danny McCray when
most defensive backs wouldn't have reached the ball; (b) the fake field goal run to paydirt by surprisingly fleet LSU kicker Colt David on the subsequent
drive; and c) Emanuel Cook dropping a ball he should have intercepted and ran back for a South Carolina touchdown in the third quarter.
Both Mitchell and Chris Smelley acquitted themselves decently against an intimidating LSU defense. Both offenses were hindered by the heavy rain in Baton
Rouge, especially in the second half. The teams tallied only 16 points between them after the half, well under the second-half total of 21 1/2 points.
South Florida Bulls
South Florida aced its first test as a ranked football team, building an early lead and never really letting off the gas.
South Florida led 20-3 at the half and the Bulls -6 1/2 in the second half was attractive largely because of their defense. UNC quarterback T.J. Yates looked
justifiably nervous in his first start against a good front seven and rushed a ton of throws. Yates threw four interceptions and was sacked four times, but
those numbers don't tell you just how fast the Bulls' defenders looked.
UCLA Bruins
The dreariness in Los Angeles seemed to affect the downtrodden Bruins early in the game. Their offense was simply brutal in the first half, but the second
half was a different story as the Bruins busted big play after big play against a Washington defense that was sieve-like after halftime for the second
straight week. On a related note, how many bettors figured a 55-point second half was coming after that 10-10 opening half?
Things get interesting now, with starting quarterback Ben Olson still concussed and backup Patrick Cowan injuring his knee on Saturday. Cowan's mobility was
already hampered by his tight hamstring before the knee injury.
USC Trojans
Are the 2007 Trojans a better bet than the 2005 Trojans because of the current squad's running back-by-committee approach (as the hyped Reggie Bush / LenDale
White combo jacked USC spreads in 2005 to ridiculous levels)? Discuss.
John David Booty went 10-for-11 on a time-killing drive to open the scoring. The fact that the Trojans only led 14-7 well into the second may have made
Trojans backers nervous, but you could see Wazzu's defenders getting progressively more tired with each drive.
USC -10 1/2 for the second half seemed like a sure bet after Pete Carroll called a timeout with one second remaining in the first half to figure out how to
disrupt a Wazzu punt. The Trojans led 27-7 at that point and while nothing came of the play, it emphasized Carroll's killer instinct.
Virginia Cavaliers
All credit to Virginia's defensive line, as their ability to knock down passes has now changed two games in a row. The Cavs blocked T.J. Yates' potential
game-winning pass against UNC in Week 3 and tipped a number of Taylor Bennett's passes on Saturday, one of which was intercepted and returned for a
touchdown.
But it's not all good news in Charlottesburg, despite the Cavs' 3-0 ACC record. Head coach Al Groh is rotating quarterbacks seemingly at random and while
Jameel Sewell looked far more effective than Peter Lalich against the Yellow Jackets, Sewell's never been able to play at a consistent level.

college football picks- (associated press) south carolina changes qb after loss at lsu.
Steve Spurrier is at it again, shuffling quarterbacks at South Carolina until he finds someone who plays the ball coach's game.
The latest demotee is Blake Mitchell, a fifth-year senior who only a week ago Spurrier declared would be the one to take the 16th-ranked Gamecocks (3-1) as
far as they would go this season.
But after South Carolina's undefeated start ended with No. 2 LSU's 28-16 victory, Spurrier said freshman Chris Smelley would get the start when the Gamecocks
return to action this week against Mississippi State (3-1).
It's the second straight year Mitchell's been benched early in the season.
''Blake's had a lot of pressure on him'' and that has led to erratic performances, Spurrier said. ''So we're going to give Chris Smelley a chance right
now.''
Mitchell lost his starting spot in 2006 after South Carolina's 18-0 loss to Georgia. He returned late in the season and led the Gamecocks to close with three
straight wins - something that hadn't happened in 33 years.
But Mitchell hasn't looked as sharp so far this year. He was 7 of 16 for 70 yards against LSU before Smelley took over.
The loss dropped South Carolina four spots in this week's ranking and ended their six-game win streak.
Spurrier had been concerned about Mitchell's tendency to hold the ball too long, missing chances to connect with receivers on timing patterns.
Smelley did a good job, Spurrier said, in getting rid of the ball quickly enough to move the Gamecocks. Smelley was 12-of-26 for 174 yards and South
Carolina's only touchdown pass Saturday, a 1-yard scoring toss to Kenny McKinley.
Spurrier didn't want to get into particulars about what Mitchell did wrong to lose his spot.
''But obviously we weren't going very far and we just decided to let Chris have a chance,'' Spurrier said. ''He threw the ball pretty well, actually.''
Spurrier also didn't say if Mitchell or third-stringer Tommy Beecher would come in if Smelley was ineffective or aggravated the sprained right shoulder hurt
in the Gamecocks' opener against Louisiana-Lafayette.
''Right now, Chris has a chance to go the distance,'' Spurrier said.
Spurrier was a Heisman Trophy winner as Florida's quarterback in 1966. He has called his own plays and coached quarterbacks throughout his career - and that
has led to some quick hooks for Spurrier's starters.
Figuring out Spurrier's rotation during his later seasons at Florida was a puzzle. He went with little-used Jesse Palmer against the Gamecocks in 1999 over
starter Doug Johnson.
A year later, it was Palmer again going for the Gators in the South Carolina game when Spurrier was dissatisfied with starter Rex Grossman.
In 2006, Spurrier thought Mitchell was ready to do great things as South Carolina's quarterback, saying his player had a chance to be an all-Southeastern
Conference pick.
Instead, Mitchell flopped so badly he was replaced after two games by the more mobile Syvelle Newton.
But Mitchell kept his poise and stayed ready. When Spurrier brought him in the second half of South Carolina's game with Arkansas a year back, Mitchell
nearly rallied the team back from a 17-point deficit before losing 26-20.
Mitchell started the rest of the season. The way he finished had Spurrier and Gamecock fans hopeful Mitchell would pick up where he left off.
But whether it was a one-game academic suspension that made him miss the opener or a three-interception, one-fumble performance against South Carolina State
two games ago, Mitchell did not meet expectations - and finds himself again out of action.
After the LSU loss, Mitchell was asked what he would do on the sidelines. ''Just sit there and wait until, I guess, somebody else messes up and I might get a
chance to get back in there,'' he said.
With Spurrier as coach, that could be as soon as the next game.

college football free picks- (associated press) michigan to wait to announce starting qb for saturday.
Two starts into his college career, Ryan Mallett continues to make strides in his role as Michigan's emergency go-to-quarterback.
The freshman led the Wolverines to a 14-9 upset victory over No. 10 Penn State when he completed 16-of-29 passes for 170 yards and scored Michigan's first
touchdown on a 10-yard run.
Mallett's progression appears to be coming just as Wolverines senior starter Chad Henne moves closer to returning to the lineup.
Coach Lloyd Carr said at his weekly press conference Monday that Henne, who was injured in the first half of Michigan's 39-7 loss to Oregon, has been
medically cleared to return.
When that happens, though, remains unclear. Carr did not announce who would start Michigan's first road game, Saturday, at Northwestern.
''It's to a point now where the doctors will leave it up to Chad, how he feels and of course, it will depend on what I see and what I think,'' Carr said.
''We're encouraged with where he is, but we have to continue to watch him. We want to make sure that when he comes back, his mobility is there.
''We're not going to do anything that's going to jeopardize Chad and his ability to react to the pressure that comes with that position.''
Carr said Henne took snaps throughout the week leading up to Penn State, continuing to recover from the leg injury he sustained against Oregon.
While Henne was on the mend, Mallett was given more of Michigan's complex offense to digest after guiding the Wolverines to a 38-0 rout of Notre Dame.
In Saturday's victory over the Nittany Lions, Mallett continued to demonstrate the skills that made him one of Michigan's prized recruits. His steady
progress quickly earned the respect of his teammates.
''Chad's a great leader and it's his huddle,'' offensive lineman Steve Schilling said Monday. ''But Ryan did a great job of maintaining that. He's a leader
beyond his years.''
Carr said that while he sensed some early nervousness, Mallett was not intimidated, instead showing a grasp of the position. While saying Mallett made more
mistakes Saturday than he did in his first collegiate start against Notre Dame, Carr said the miscues came with an added work load.
''He did some things that excite you as a coach. But what we're trying to do is to get him to where he could perform on a more consistent basis,'' Carr said.
''That entails getting him more repetitions. There's nothing like game experience to help a guy understand the urgency of doing the things that he has to
do.''
When pressed about when Henne could return, Carr re-emphasized the fact the senior would not play until both coach and player felt the time was right.
''The only thing I can tell you is I'm not going to play him until I know that he's ready,'' Carr said. ''That's the only thing I know to tell you. A part of
that will be how he feels, a big part of it.
college football picks- (associated press) oklahoma starter out for year with achilles injury.
Oklahoma defensive end John Williams had surgery Tuesday to repair a torn Achilles' tendon and will miss the rest of the season.
''It all went as expected,'' Sooners coach Bob Stoops said. ''The doctors were pleased and had nothing that was surprising. It all went the way it was
supposed to.''
Williams started three of No. 3 Oklahoma's first four games and had recorded one sack and four tackles for a loss before he was injured in the third quarter
of last Friday's game at Tulsa. He also suffered a season-ending injury in 2005, when he tore a knee ligament in the opening game against TCU.
It's just unfortunate. He was playing so well here,'' Stoops said.
Stoops said it was ''just too soon to know'' whether Williams, who is scheduled to graduate in December, will seek a sixth year of eligibility.
Alonzo Dotson, who started against Miami, is expected to fill Williams' defensive end position opposite Auston English on Saturday at Colorado.
''We've got other guys that are used to playing,'' Stoops said. ''Alonzo Dotson and Auston English have been playing great. Alan Davis, Jeremy Beal, those
guys have got to step up and take over in those spots, and they're more than capable.''
Oddsmakers have listed the Oklahoma as 22 1/2-point favoites for Saturday's contest.
Stoops said Chris Brown, who's been splitting time at tailback with Allen Patrick and DeMarco Murray, was able to go through conditioning and could return
against the Buffaloes after smacking the back of his head on the turf against Tulsa.
''We expect him to be able to play. I'm not saying he is yet. That's something they'll check by the end of the week,'' Stoops said. ''... There aren't any
lingering signs that there's anything going on there.
college football free picks- (associated press) colorado state safety out of hospital.
Colorado State safety Klint Kubiak was released from a Houston hospital Monday afternoon following tests that showed the junior had low blood pressure and a
bleeding ulcer.
Kubiak dropped to a knee following pre-game warm-ups in the Rams' game against the University of Houston on Saturday.
Kubiak, whose father Gary is the coach of the Houston Texans, met his parents for dinner Friday night and planned to spend Sunday on the sidelines at the
Texans game against the Indianapolis Colts.
Rams coach Sonny Lubick said he wasn't sure about the diagnosis concerning Kubiak's health.
''I think when they were in there in the scope they thought they could maybe try to fix that a little bit,'' Lubick said. ''But yet he still needed some
transfusion yesterday and so I'm sure he lost a lot of blood. I can't say much more than that because I don't know.
Though Kubiak will be back in Colorado on Tuesday, his status for the team's game against Texas Christian University on Saturday is uncertain.
''I would say right now it would seem like it would be very doubtful,'' said Lubick. ''He's resilient and I know that Klint wants to play. I don't know how
fast you recover from those things. Maybe if Klint got back and got some practice in Wednesday, maybe he could. I would say we should prepare that he would
not be playing.''
If he can't play, it's yet another blow to the foundering Rams. Colorado State has the Mountain West Conference's second-worst pass defense, surrendering
373.7 yards.
They've started the season 0-3 and have lost 10 consecutive games dating back to last year, and seven straight games in the MWC.
The streak was nearly snapped when the Rams led the Cougars 24-10 in the third quarter, but Colorado State saw its lead evaporate and lost the game 38-27.
Lubick said he has no plans to take the redshirt off any of his players to help the struggling secondary.
''No you can't do that,'' Lubick said. ''The game doesn't go that way. You can't bring a guy in and in three days teach him how to play strong safety or free
safety.
